What Happens Before the Nail Art
When people see a finished set of nails, the colour and artwork naturally get most of the attention. But a large part of a good nail service happens before any of that begins.
Preparation is not the decorative part of the appointment, but it creates the foundation for everything that follows.
It Starts with a Conversation
Before choosing products or beginning preparation, I need to understand the person sitting in front of me.
We talk about their natural nails, lifestyle, previous products, any problems they have experienced and what they want from the appointment. Somebody wanting simple protection for their natural nails may need a different service from somebody wanting added length or detailed art.
You do not need to know the correct nail terminology before you book. That is part of what the consultation is for.
Looking at the Natural Nail
A nail professional should look at the condition of the nails and surrounding skin before proceeding.
This is not about diagnosing medical conditions. Nail professionals are not doctors. It is about recognising when something looks unusual, when a service may need to be adjusted and when it is safer to stop and recommend medical advice before applying product.
Sometimes the most professional decision is not to continue that day.
Careful Preparation
Preparation may include cleaning the hands and nails, refining the shape, caring for the cuticle area and removing surface contaminants that could interfere with the service.
The exact process depends on the natural nail and the product being used. More filing is not automatically better. Preparation should be controlled and appropriate, without unnecessarily thinning or damaging the natural nail.
The Right Product and Structure
Gel, builder gel and acrylic do different jobs. The right choice depends on the client’s nails, length, lifestyle and goals.
Structure matters too. Product needs to be placed with purpose so the nail is balanced for the length and shape being created. This becomes especially important when adding strength or extensions.
Then the Creative Work Begins
Once the foundation is right, the colour and artwork can begin.
That is when the original idea starts becoming something personal, but the quality of the finished set still relies on all the quieter decisions that came first.
At RKW, the art matters. So does what sits underneath it.
If you are unsure which appointment to choose, view the RKW services or get in touch before booking.
